Q1 2026 Outages Show Why Multi-Region Hosting Matters

Q1 2026 produced an important lesson for infrastructure operators: some of the most visible internet disruptions came from causes outside normal engineering failure modes.

Regional conflicts, infrastructure failures and large-scale connectivity events showed that availability is not only a software problem. Physical location can become a failure domain just as important as servers and networks. [1][2]

A better runbook, safer deployment process or improved testing strategy does not solve every class of outage.

Conflict, infrastructure and outage volume

Physical infrastructure remains a fundamental dependency for internet availability. When facilities or regional infrastructure are affected, connectivity can degrade even when the underlying software systems are operating normally.

The AWS Bahrain Region incident demonstrated the limits of single-region redundancy. The incident affected AWS services, with AWS confirming infrastructure impacts and ongoing service disruption. [1]

Beyond individual incidents, internet outage monitoring continues to show that ISP networks, cloud providers and edge infrastructure experience regular disruptions. ThousandEyes tracks these events globally, highlighting that connectivity failures are a normal operational risk rather than an exceptional event. [2]

None of these failures are primarily caused by a bad deploy. None are fixed by adding another approval step to a change window.

Correlated failure breaks the maths

High-availability design works because failures are usually assumed to be independent.

Two servers fail independently, so having two servers reduces risk. Two availability zones reduce risk because many failures affect only one zone. Multiple copies work when the copies do not share the same failure cause.

Geographic, political and physical failures are different.

They are correlated by location, infrastructure and jurisdiction.

A nationwide infrastructure failure can take large portions of locally dependent infrastructure offline. A jurisdiction-level event can affect large portions of the networks operating under that authority. Physical damage at a facility can affect multiple availability zones at once.

Redundancy only protects you when your copies are separated from the same underlying risk.

If both copies are in the same country, you have protected against hardware failure. You have not protected against national-level events.

One question to answer honestly

Ask one question about your current architecture:

What is the smallest event that takes all of my copies offline at once?

If the answer is a rack, you are probably protected against many individual hardware failures.

If the answer is a building, you have standard facility redundancy.

If the answer is a national grid failure, a regional outage or a single government's decision, you have single-region risk wearing a multi-AZ costume.

The solution is usually less expensive than expected because the backup environment does not need to match the primary environment. A standby system, DNS failover target or off-site backup in another jurisdiction can provide meaningful protection without duplicating your entire infrastructure.

Four locations, separate failure domains

Smaller providers can apply the same principle as hyperscalers: separate failure domains.

Our own network is built across four countries with different infrastructure environments: Tirana, Skopje, Amsterdam and Dublin.

That means infrastructure spread across four countries, multiple transit paths and different legal jurisdictions.

Albania also benefits from multiple international connectivity paths, reducing dependence on any single route.

Geographic separation does not require enterprise budgets. A low-cost standby VPS in another country can be enough for backups, DNS failover or emergency recovery.

For customers operating their own AS, AS210464 allows more direct control over routing policies for prefixes announced through our network, helping influence traffic paths during regional events.

Caveats we would rather state ourselves

A multi-country network is not immune to correlated failure.

Europe shares internet exchange points, transit providers, submarine cable systems and regulatory environments. A sufficiently large regional event can still affect multiple countries at the same time.

The takeaway is straightforward:

Many hosting setups are still one national-level event away from complete loss, and many owners have never tested that assumption.

Q1 2026 provided several reminders that availability is not only about servers, software and deployment processes.

It is also about geography.
